Spring left us on the historic Summer Solstice, also known as the Sabbat of Litha. Historically this was a pagan holiday. Litha is one of the sabbats. "She" is seen at a time when the Oak King is overpowered by the Holly King, all in which is a Celtic, Norse belief. Pagans use this day to meditate on the purification and healing of their life. Bonfires, music, and handfasting are all very common during this day. Of course this day is celebrated by various groups of beliefs and religions, including Wiccans. All this was fascinating while studying it in school. I love hearing about all kinds of different traditions. This day, I always thought, was the most fascinating.
As I began writing up this post, a crazy and random Washington thunderstorm started, the first thunderstorm since we have been living here. Watching the rain fall in my wingback vintage chair is so relaxing. Having a good book in hand or a macbook in this case just adds to the thunderous weather. Yes, it is summer, but looking at my window now you would not be able to tell that.
I rarely get to see the sun here in Washington. It is kinda sad; however, I love the rain--too much of it though could be somewhat draining. Therefore, I have a picnic mat ready to go right near my backdoor to grab and take out the minute I see the sun. I lay it out and lay down with a book, a pillow, my camera, my water bottle, my daughter, and my dog and we just relax in the bit of sun that shows it's face--usually for only a few minutes here and there. Heck--I'll take it! My early morning pilates and yoga workouts in the backyard, on the fresh green grass with the sun barely up and all the solders heading off the PT is so rejuvenating and refreshing! It is something that I am starting to look forward too now....as long as I'm in bed and asleep by 9PM, LOL.
Along with summer (and of course it depends on where you live in the world) comes those longer days. It is so hard trying to go to sleep with the sun shining in your bedroom window. You're three years old, people are still walking around outside, birds are chirping and there are no stars to do your nightly wishing upon--life is hard for a three year old in the summer time! Therefore, I had to dig out my blackout pulldown shade that we purchased and used in Germany with their late summer days; however, my daughter has more windows in her new bedroom, so we are going to have to go out and get some blackout curtains. My husband and I can survive, but not the poor little one who thrives on every little detail in life right now.
I love you, Summer, but in Washington you are kinda like....not here at all. It's not hot, it's hardly even warm. The sun barely shines bright and blinding. You give me rain and thunder when I am craving warmth and clear skies. Please show up more apparent soon! You're just killing my mood right now!
